Camellia: lower leaves turning yellow

What you are looking at

The oldest leaves — those nearest the base — losing their green while the growing tip stays healthy. Extremely common on tomatoes and peppers, and one of the least specific signs in growing: at least four unrelated things produce it, and one of them is the plant behaving perfectly normally.

One of the causes below is a normal process rather than a problem. Read that one first: treating a healthy plant does more harm than leaving an unhealthy one a day longer.

    Yellowing between the veins of the YOUNGEST leaves while the veins stay green. The soil usually contains plenty of iron; what is wrong is that the pH is too high for the plant to take it up. Adding iron to the soil without correcting the pH changes nothing.

    • · on an acid-loving plant this is the tell: iron shortage strikes new growth first, where nitrogen shortage strikes old growth first

    Argues against it

    • · yellowing confined to the oldest leaves points to nitrogen or to normal ageing. Iron is immobile, so a shortage cannot show on old leaves while new ones stay green — this rules it out entirely.

    Look at which leaves are yellow and test the soil pH. Youngest leaves yellow with green veins, on a plant that wants pH 4.5–5.5, is lime-induced chlorosis — and it will keep happening on alkaline soil however much you feed it.

    What to do now

    Test the pH before doing anything else. If it is above about 6, the long-term answer is to grow it in a container of ericaceous compost rather than to keep treating the ground — feeding does not fix a plant that cannot take up what is already there.

    Not a problem, and included as a candidate because it is one of the commonest explanations for a single yellow leaf on an otherwise healthy plant. Every plant sheds its oldest leaves; a differential that cannot return 'nothing is wrong' will always find something to blame.

    • · the leaves being shed are two or three years old and sit inside the bush, while the new flush on the outside is unaffected
    • · it is confined to the shaded interior of the plant rather than spread across the canopy
    • · nothing changed, which is what you would expect of an annual process

    Argues against it

    • · the newest leaves are the ones yellowing, and a camellia never sheds this year's flush as part of ordinary renewal — that pattern belongs to iron lock-out — this rules it out entirely.
    • · green veins against yellow tissue is a nutrient-availability signature, and an ageing leaf goes yellow all through

    Check this next

    Part the branches and look at where the yellow leaves actually are. A camellia renewing itself yellows old leaves DEEP INSIDE the bush in late spring while the outside is covered in glossy new growth — if the plant is flushing well at the tips, the yellow leaves within are last year's being cashed in, not a deficiency.

    What to do now

    Leave it alone and check again in a fortnight. The leaves will drop of their own accord and the plant will be denser afterwards, not thinner. Resist feeding it: the reflex here is an ericaceous or sequestered-iron feed, and applying one to a camellia that is simply renewing its foliage teaches you nothing about whether the plant needed it.
