A dark, sunken, leathery patch at the flower end of a fruit. It is not a disease and nothing is attacking the plant: the fruit could not move enough calcium into its fastest-growing tissue while it was forming, almost always because water supply was irregular.

Blossom end rot is a flat or sunken patch at the blossom end — the bottom, away from the stalk — that is leathery, dry and firm rather than soft, and inside the flesh beneath it is brown and dry through to the middle. It has no mould on it unless something else has moved in afterwards. Then look at the rest of the truss: the affected fruit are usually the earliest and biggest, and later ones on the same plant come out perfect once the watering is steady.

Water steadily rather than more — this is a transport problem rather than a shortage, so calcium feeds and eggshells do nothing. Keep the compost evenly damp and never let a growbag or pot dry right out between waterings; a self-watering tray or a daily routine in hot weather is worth more than anything applied. Pick off the affected fruit so the plant stops carrying them. Larger containers and mulched compost surfaces both help, and the fruit that set after the watering steadies will be sound.

The dark purple, brown or near-black stage that many chilli and sweet pepper cultivars pass through on the way from green to their final colour. It usually starts as a patch at the blossom end or on the shoulder facing the sun, spreads over the fruit, and then gives way to red, orange or yellow. The flesh under it is firm and normal, which is what separates it from everything that is actually wrong.

Feel the patch, then wait a week. A ripening fruit is firm right up to the dark area and the surface is flat and smooth with the rest of the skin — no dent, no leathery texture, nothing to press into — and within a fortnight the red or orange comes through from underneath. Blossom end rot is sunken and leathery and never turns red. Look at the whole plant too: if every fruit of the same age is darkening in the same place, that is a cultivar characteristic, because a disorder picks individual fruit.
What to do now
Leave the fruit on the plant and look again in a week or two, which is the whole of the answer. Many varieties — jalapeño, Hungarian hot wax, and anything sold as a purple or chocolate pepper — pass through a dark stage as standard, and picking at that point simply gives a fruit that is not at its best. If you want certainty now, cut one fruit across: firm pale flesh right up to the skin means it is ripening, and brown dry flesh under the patch means it is not.
