    A herbaceous perennial collapsing to nothing in autumn, or a seasonally dormant houseplant dropping most of its leaves in winter. The plant is intact underground and the top growth is expendable — an alocasia that has shed every leaf but has a firm corm is dormant, not dead, and is most often killed afterwards by being watered as though it were still growing.

    Canes that leaf out in spring and then die suddenly, usually while carrying fruit. Dark patches appear near the base and the cane snaps cleanly when bent. It enters through wounds, so most of the prevention is about not making them.

    Take hold of a dying cane near ground level and look at the base. Cane blight leaves a dark brown-purple patch at or just above soil level, and the cane above it snaps cleanly instead of bending because the wood inside has died — a healthy or merely senescing cane bends. Peeling, silvery cracking bark on that lower section confirms it. The decisive question is which canes: blight takes first-year canes that never fruited, and normal senescence never does.

    What to do now

    Cut affected canes right out at ground level, taking them below the lesion, and bin or burn them rather than composting. Avoid wounding the cane bases when hoeing or weeding, since that is the route in, and improve drainage where the row sits wet. No approved fungicide is available to a home grower for it, so removal and avoiding base injury are the whole of the response; a badly affected stool is best replaced with certified stock on fresh ground.

    Yellowing between the veins of the YOUNGEST leaves while the veins stay green. The soil usually contains plenty of iron; what is wrong is that the pH is too high for the plant to take it up. Adding iron to the soil without correcting the pH changes nothing.

    • · iron does not move within the plant, so it is the youngest leaves that go short first — the opposite of a magnesium or nitrogen shortage

    • · shortage showing on the oldest leaves first is a mobile nutrient being moved out of them, which iron cannot be — this rules it out entirely.

    Look at where the yellowing starts and ask what the ground is. Lime-induced chlorosis takes the YOUNGEST leaves first — bright yellow between sharply green veins on the new cane tips, while the older leaves lower down stay green — because iron cannot be moved around inside the plant. Nitrogen and magnesium shortages do the reverse and start at the bottom. Then check the soil: chalk in the subsoil, a plot that was limed for brassicas, or builder's rubble near a wall all push the pH beyond what a raspberry can work with, and the canes stay short and thin for years without ever quite dying.

    What to do now

    Do not lime, and do not add a general fertiliser, which usually makes it worse. Mulch generously each spring with composted bark, leafmould or well-rotted manure — acidifying organic matter is the intervention that actually shifts this over a season or two — and use a chelated iron feed for a faster response while it takes effect. Where the ground is genuinely chalky, a raised bed of imported acid loam or a large container is more reliable than trying to correct the plot, and blackberries or a hybrid berry will grow where a raspberry will not.
