Etiolation

Growth stretched towards a light source that is not strong enough: long bare stem between leaves, small pale foliage, and a plant leaning hard one way. It is not a disease and it does not reverse — the stretched stem stays stretched, and only growth made in better light comes back compact.

What brings it on

Insufficient light for the plant's needs, most often in winter, in a north-facing room, or on seedlings raised on a windowsill rather than under a lamp.

Preventing it

Ordered by how much difference each measure actually makes, not by how often it is repeated.

  • Match the plant to the light the position actually has, and turn pots regularly so growth stays even. Seedlings need the brightest position available from the moment they germinate.

Dealing with it once it is there

  • Move it to better light and cut back the stretched growth where the plant tolerates pruning. Expect the existing stems to stay as they are — recovery shows in what grows next, not in what is already there.

On sprays and treatments

GrowingHQ does not tell anyone what to apply, at what rate, or how often. Pesticide approvals differ by country, change without notice, and the product label is legally binding — it is also the document you are holding. What is described here is cultural and physical control, which is what a home grower can act on without a label in front of them.
