Not enough light
Shows as stretched growth with long gaps between leaves, small pale new leaves, loss of variegation, leaning hard towards a window, and — in flowering plants — foliage without flowers. It is the commonest reason an indoor plant fails to thrive while appearing to be watered and fed correctly.
What brings it on
A position too far from a window, a north-facing room, a plant sold as 'low light' that in fact only tolerates it, or short winter days. Light falls off far more steeply with distance from a window than it appears to, because the eye adapts.

Preventing it
Ordered by how much difference each measure actually makes, not by how often it is repeated.
- Match the plant to the position rather than the position to the plant. Most plants sold for low light tolerate it rather than want it, and the difference shows over months as slow decline rather than as an obvious failure.

Dealing with it once it is there
- Move it closer to a window, out of direct sun unless the species wants it, and turn the pot regularly. Growth already stretched will not shorten — the improvement shows only in what the plant makes next, so give it a season before judging.
