Workable rather than ideal. The large-headed hybrids are top-heavy on a tall stem, so use a heavy pot with a wide base and stand it out of the wind, and expect the leaves to be yellowing and unattractive by the time the flower is at its best — which is manageable in a border where something else hides them and conspicuous in a pot. Very free-draining compost, with grit.

Two to three times the bulb's own height is the working rule, and the four plants that break it are the four most often planted wrong. A bearded iris buried by mulch or a tidy neighbour will make leaves for years and never flower again.
After flowering. The leaves start yellowing from the tips before the flower is even open, which is normal and cannot be prevented. Plant it behind something that comes up later and covers the mess — the seed heads stand for months and are the better half of the plant.

Growing it

  • PlantingPlant them behind lower perennials. The strap leaves yellow and collapse as the flower opens, and a plant in front of them hides that without affecting the display.
  • PruningLeave the seedheads standing. They hold their structure well into autumn and are among the few bulbs that earn their space after flowering.
  • WateringNone in the ground. Ornamental alliums come from dry stony places and a hot dry summer dormancy is exactly what they want, which makes them one of the few bulbs that genuinely prefer a neglected sunny border to a well-tended one. They fail in heavy wet soil rather than in dry soil. Where the ground is clay, plant on a handful of grit and choose the driest sunniest position you have; in a pot, stop watering as soon as the leaves start to yellow, which happens surprisingly early.
  • FeedingGenerally unnecessary and easy to overdo. Rich, fed soil produces taller softer stems that go over in wind, which is the commonest complaint about the large-headed hybrids and is usually blamed on the weather. If a clump is visibly declining after several years, a high-potash feed while the leaves are green will help rebuild the bulb, but the more likely fix is to lift and separate a congested planting once the foliage has gone.

Where to make a pruning cutFour stems compared. The first is cut cleanly on a slope about five millimetres above an outward-facing bud, sloping away from it, and is labelled correct.
