Apium graveolens var. rapaceum

A knobbly swollen stem base with celery's flavour and none of its stringiness, occupying the ground for a full season. Like celery it is a water-hungry bog plant, and the difference between a tennis ball and a football is almost entirely how consistently it was watered from midsummer onwards.
