Suits a pot well, provided the compost is gritty and free-draining — the blue colour is best on poor dry soil and a plant in rich damp compost goes greener and flops. Use it as a small permanent pot or as the structural element in a mixed one. Comb the dead material out with your fingers in spring rather than shearing it, and expect to replace or divide the plant every three or four years as it dies out in the middle.

  • PropagationLift and split the clump every two or three years, throwing away the brown dead centre and replanting the living outer pieces. A blue fescue that has gone hollow in the middle cannot be fed or watered back into shape — division is the only remedy and it works completely.
  • PlantingThe blue colour is a waxy bloom on the leaf and it develops properly only in full sun on lean dry soil. Rich ground and shade both produce a greener, floppier plant, so it is the one grass here that is actively better for being underfed.
