Growing it
- PlantingRestrict the roots. Plant into a lined pit roughly 60 cm each way with a solid base, or into a large container. A fig given a free root run makes a magnificent leafy plant and very little fruit.
- ProtectionIn autumn, remove any figs larger than a pea. Only the small embryonic figs survive the winter to ripen next year; the larger ones will not ripen and will rot on the plant, and leaving them wastes the plant's resources.
- Protect the shoot tips through hard weather with fleece or straw. It is the embryonic figs rather than the plant that need saving.
