Possible but top-heavy: a flowering spike is a metre of sail on a small root plate, so use a deep heavy pot, plant the corms 10–15 cm down rather than shallow, and put a cane in at planting rather than trying to stake a spike later. Better in the cutting patch than as a display pot, which is the honest answer for most gardens.

A solid swollen stem base, not layered. The old corm is used up each season and a new one forms on top of it, often with small cormlets around the base that take a year or two to reach flowering size.

Two to three times the bulb's own height is the working rule, and the four plants that break it are the four most often planted wrong. A bearded iris buried by mulch or a tidy neighbour will make leaves for years and never flower again.
Lifting and storing. Lift before the first hard frost, cut the stems off, dry for a fortnight somewhere airy, then snap the shrivelled spent corm off the base of the new one and store the new one dry and frost-free. The cormlets clustered round the base are next year's stock and take a season or two to reach flowering size.

Growing it

  • HarvestingLift the corms in autumn before hard frost, cut the stems off, dry them for a fortnight somewhere airy, then snap the shrivelled old corm off the base of the new one and store the new one frost-free and dry. The small cormlets around the base are next year's plants if you want them, and take a season or two to reach flowering size.
  • SupportStake them, or grow them in a cutting row where they can lean on each other. A flowering gladiolus spike is top-heavy and one-sided, and the first summer storm lays an unsupported row flat.
  • ProtectionLarge-flowered gladioli are not hardy in most of Britain and the corms are lifted each autumn, about six weeks after flowering or once the leaves yellow, and stored dry and frost-free until spring. In a mild, sharply drained garden in the south-west they can be left in with a deep mulch, but wet is what kills them rather than cold. The hardy species — Gladiolus communis subsp. byzantinus — stays in the ground anywhere and needs none of this.
  • WateringWater generously once the spikes begin to extend and through flowering — a gladiolus building a metre of flower spike in eight weeks is doing a great deal of work and a dry spell at that point produces short spikes with gaps in them, or buds that never open at the top. Before that, while it is only in leaf, ordinary rainfall is usually enough. Stop watering after flowering and let the corm ripen off; it needs to go into storage dry, and a corm lifted wet is a corm that goes mouldy in the box.
  • FeedingFeed with a high-potash liquid feed every fortnight from the point where the flower spike is visible inside the leaves until flowering finishes. The corm you lift in October is not the corm you planted — the old one is spent and entirely replaced by a new one formed on top of it — so this year's feeding is what determines whether next year's corm is a flowering-sized one or a disappointment. Avoid nitrogen-rich feeds, which give lush leaves and soft spikes that go over in the first wind.

Harvesting

  • When it is readyCut spikes for the vase when the lowest two or three florets are showing colour but have not yet opened — the rest open in water, and a spike cut fully open drops its bottom flowers within a day. Lift the corms about six weeks after flowering, or once the foliage has yellowed, and before the first hard frost.
  • How to pick itCut flower spikes at an angle leaving at least four leaves on the plant, which is what feeds the corm for next year. To lift, fork the plant up whole, cut the stem off just above the corm, and dry the corms somewhere warm and airy for a fortnight. The shrivelled old corm underneath then separates cleanly and is discarded, along with any tiny cormlets not wanted for growing on.
  • Keeping itStore the dried corms in paper bags or open trays somewhere frost-free, dry and around 5–10 °C. Dusting with sulphur helps against storage rots.
