A red dessert gooseberry sweet enough to eat straight off the bush when fully ripe, which the culinary cultivars are not. Hardy, as its Finnish origin suggests.

The standard culinary gooseberry, grown for its resistance to American gooseberry mildew rather than its flavour. Very vigorous and very thorny. Gooseberries fruit on spurs and on the base of one-year shoots, so they are spur-pruned like an apple rather than cut to the ground like a blackcurrant.

Growing it

  • ThinningThin the crop in late May or early June and cook the thinnings. This is the classic two-crops-from-one-bush trick: the fruit removed is a usable cooking crop, and what remains ripens larger and sweeter.
  • ProtectionCheck the middle of the bush from late spring for gooseberry sawfly larvae. They start low and central and can strip a bush of leaves within a fortnight; caught early, hand-picking is enough.
  • WateringWater in dry spells while the fruit is swelling, particularly on sandy soil and in containers. Gooseberries tolerate more drought than blackcurrants, but a dry June followed by heavy rain splits the skins just as they are ripening.
  • FeedingSulphate of potash in late winter, with a compost mulch. Gooseberries are more sensitive to potassium shortage than most fruit and show it as brown scorched leaf margins, which is regularly mistaken for drought or for a disease.
  • PropagationHardwood cuttings in late autumn, with all but the top three or four buds rubbed off so the bush is grown on a short clear leg — the same treatment as a redcurrant, and for the same reason: a gooseberry that suckers from below ground is impossible to pick from and impossible to prune.
