Growing it

  • ThinningThin the bunches, and thin the berries within a bunch on dessert grapes with scissors. Crowded berries cannot colour or ripen and split against each other.
  • TrainingTie in new growth as it extends rather than letting it hang. Vine shoots are brittle at the base and snap where they join the rod.
  • WateringAn established vine in open ground rarely needs watering and crops better slightly dry — this is a plant whose roots go a long way down. Water young vines while they establish, and any vine growing in a greenhouse border, where no rain reaches the soil at all. Stop watering as the fruit begins to colour or the berries split.
  • FeedingA general fertiliser in late winter and a mulch is enough for a vine in the ground. Under glass, or where the crop was poor, add a high-potassium feed every fortnight from when the fruit sets until it colours. Nitrogen late in the season gives soft growth that does not ripen and mildews.
