Hard shield fern

Polystichum aculeatum

A darker, glossier and stiffer plant than its soft-textured cousin, and the better of the two where conditions are hard: it holds rigid, deep-green, evergreen fronds through the winter and tolerates dry alkaline shade that defeats most ferns. A British native of limestone banks and hedge bottoms.

Water through the first two summers regardless — dry shade kills far more newly planted things than established ones, and this plant's tolerance is a property of a settled root system rather than of a plant in a pot.

Where to make a pruning cutFour stems compared. The first is cut cleanly on a slope about five millimetres above an outward-facing bud, sloping away from it, and is labelled correct.
