Growing it

  • ProtectionAssume slug and snail damage and plan for it rather than reacting to it. A pot standing clear of the ground is the most effective defence available to a home gardener; thick-leaved and heavily blue cultivars are noticeably less attractive to molluscs than thin-leaved ones, which is a purchase decision rather than a treatment.
  • WateringKeep the soil moist through summer. Hostas in dry shade — under a mature tree, for instance — stay small and brown at the edges, and dry shade is a materially harder position than the damp shade they are usually recommended for.
  • PropagationDivide in early spring as the shoots emerge, when you can see where the crowns are and how to cut between them. Lift the whole clump and cut it apart with a sharp spade or an old knife, keeping at least one growing point and a good share of root on every piece. Hostas are tough and forgiving here; the commonest error is making the divisions too small to make a plant again quickly.
  • FeedingA mulch of garden compost or well-rotted manure around the crown each spring is the right feed for a hosta in the ground, and for most plants it is the only one needed — the leaf size everybody grows them for comes from moisture and soil richness together rather than from fertiliser alone. Plants in pots do want a balanced liquid feed every few weeks from the time the leaves unfurl until midsummer, then nothing, so the plant can die back cleanly. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds: soft lush leaves are noticeably more attractive to slugs, which is a real cost on this plant of all plants.
