Most hyacinths are grown in a pot rather than a bed, and prepared bulbs for indoor flowering are a specific job: pot in September, keep them cold and dark at around 9°C for ten weeks until the shoots are a few centimetres tall, then bring them into gentle warmth. Brought in too early they flower down among the leaves; kept too warm too soon they produce leaf and a stunted spike.

Two to three times the bulb's own height is the working rule, and the four plants that break it are the four most often planted wrong. A bearded iris buried by mulch or a tidy neighbour will make leaves for years and never flower again.

Growing it

  • ProtectionFor flowering indoors at Christmas, buy prepared bulbs and give them a full ten to twelve weeks somewhere completely dark and genuinely cold — under 9 °C — before bringing them into warmth. Cutting that period short is why forced hyacinths come up with a flower head jammed down among the leaves.
  • PlantingPlant forced bulbs out in the garden after flowering rather than throwing them away. They will not force again, and they settle down into perfectly good if looser garden hyacinths within a couple of seasons.
  • WateringOutdoors, water in once at planting and leave it to the weather. Hyacinths need a dry summer rest like the other Mediterranean bulbs, and a bulb sitting in wet summer soil softens and rots. Bulbs being forced for indoor flowering are a different job with a genuinely different rule: keep the compost barely moist and never wet. On a hyacinth glass, keep the water level just BELOW the base of the bulb rather than touching it. The roots reach down to find it, and a bulb sat in water rots before it flowers.
  • FeedingA forced hyacinth needs no feeding at all — everything it flowers with was packed into the bulb by the grower the previous summer, and nothing you add during flowering changes the display. What feeding does affect is whether the bulb is worth keeping afterwards. Plant it out in the garden when the flowers are over, feed with a high-potash feed while the leaves are still green, and let it die down; it will never force again and will not give that dense showroom spike, but it settles into a looser, longer-lived and arguably better garden plant.
