Powdery mildew on a pumpkin or squash is a surface dust that wipes off, appearing on the oldest leaves from late July onwards — and by then the fruit is usually made. The question that matters is not whether it is mildew but whether it arrived before or after the fruit set: mildew in June on a young plant is worth acting on, mildew in September on a crop about to be cut is the end of the season arriving on time.

    Pale yellow patches on the upper leaf surface with a greyish or purplish furry growth directly beneath them, the patches often bounded by the leaf veins into angular blocks. It is routinely confused with powdery mildew and behaves in the opposite way: downy mildew needs wet conditions, powdery mildew thrives in dry ones.

Downy mildew grows on the UNDERSIDE as a dense white-grey down, and on the upper surface directly above it there is a pale yellow, faintly translucent 'oil spot' bounded by the leaf veins. Powdery mildew is the reverse in every respect: a dry white dust on the UPPER surface, no marking beneath, and it thrives in warm dry weather with humid nights while downy mildew needs the leaf actually wet. Downy also kills tissue, so the oil spots go brown and the leaf drops; powdery mildew rarely does.

    What to do now

    Pick off and bin affected leaves, then attack the humidity rather than the fungus: ventilate hard, thin congested growth and leaf-shade around fruit trusses, space plants further apart, and water the soil early in the day so foliage is dry by nightfall. Never water grapes or melons overhead. Clear fallen leaves in autumn, since the resting spores overwinter on them. No approved fungicide available to a home grower will rescue an established outbreak, so ventilation and sanitation are the entire response.
