Growing it

  • PollinationTransfer pollen from a male flower to an open female — the one with a tiny swelling behind the petals — around midday on a dry day. Under cover no insect will do it for you.
  • SupportSupport each swelling fruit in a net or a sling tied to the framework. A melon left hanging tears itself off the stem well before it ripens.
  • ThinningRestrict each plant to about four fruits. More than that and none of them ripens in a British season.
  • WateringWater freely while the plants are growing and the fruit is swelling, but water around the plant rather than into the crown — melons collapse from stem base rot where water sits against the stem. Ease off once the fruit is full size and beginning to smell, or it will be watery and split.
  • FeedingFeed every ten to fourteen days with a high-potassium tomato feed once the first fruits have set. Before that a balanced feed is enough; potassium too early gives a small plant that cannot carry a crop.
  • ProtectionAn annual, and not carried over. Melons need warmth to ripen at all in Britain and the practical autumn question is the opposite of protection: whether the fruit already set will finish. Remove any fruit that has formed after early August, since it will not ripen and only draws on the plant, and keep the greenhouse or frame closed on cool nights to hold heat around what remains.

Overnight temperature. Glass holds overnight heat that polythene loses, so a tunnel runs cooler at night than a greenhouse in the same garden. For a crop at the edge of its heat requirement that difference decides whether the fruit ripens. Melons are the crop where this difference bites hardest.
