   A root system that has filled its container and has nowhere left to go: roots circling the inside of the pot or emerging from the drainage holes, compost that dries out within a day of watering, and growth that has stalled despite feeding. The plant is short of both water and nutrients because there is almost no compost left to hold either.

   Not a matter of volume but of frequency: roots need air as well as water, and compost that never dries suffocates them. It kills more houseplants than every pest and disease combined, and its cruellest feature is that the early signs — yellowing, wilting, dropping leaves — look exactly like drought, so the instinct is to water more.
