Rootstocks — the decision that fixes the size
A grafted fruit tree is two plants. The top decides what the fruit tastes like; the rootstock decides how big the tree gets, how soon it crops and whether it needs staking for life.

Growing it
- PlantingChoose the warmest, most sheltered position available — a south or west-facing wall is ideal. Keep the graft union above soil level.
- ProtectionCover a wall-trained pear with fleece on frosty nights while it is in flower. It is the one intervention that reliably changes the outcome for pears in a cold spring.
- HarvestingPick pears BEFORE they are ripe. A pear left to ripen on the tree goes soft and brown at the core while the outside still feels firm. Lift and twist; if the stalk parts, pick the whole crop and ripen it indoors.
- WateringWater newly planted trees through their first two summers, and any tree in grass rather than bare soil, because turf takes the surface water first. Pears are less drought-tolerant than apples on Quince rootstocks, which are shallow-rooted: a dry spell while the fruit is sizing shows up as small, gritty fruit rather than as a wilted tree.
- FeedingA mulch of garden compost over the root area each spring is enough for a tree in reasonable soil. Where growth is weak — less than about 30 cm of new shoot in a season — apply a general fertiliser in late winter before growth starts. Feeding a tree that is already growing strongly produces soft shoots that scab and canker take first.
