Growing it

  • WateringMatch the watering to the leaf thickness rather than to the name on the label. The genus spans semi-succulents and thin-leaved forest plants, and a single schedule cannot suit both.
  • TransplantingPot on rarely, and only into a slightly larger pot. The root system is small relative to the top growth, and a big pot of wet compost around it is the usual cause of collapse.
  • FeedingVery little: a half-strength feed every six weeks or so through spring and summer, and none in winter. Peperomias have small root systems and semi-succulent leaves, and they are overfed far more often than underfed — the sign is soft, oversized, dull leaves on stretched stems. They also dislike being repotted into a large pot, which is the usual well-meant response to a plant that has stopped growing; keep them tight and lightly fed.
  • PropagationVery easy from cuttings in spring or summer, and worth doing before a plant gets old and sprawling. The thick-leaved kinds root from a single leaf pushed upright into damp compost — cut the leaf in half across if you want to be quick about it, and new plantlets form at the cut edge. The trailing and upright stemmed kinds root from stem-tip cuttings taken below a node. Keep them warm, lightly shaded and only just damp; peperomia cuttings rot far more often than they fail to root.
