Worth a pot mainly so it can be brought up to the doorstep in February, when nothing else is happening and the flowers are small enough to be missed at a distance. Use a loam-based compost and keep the pot in a shaded place through the summer rather than baking it dry; snowdrops are woodland plants and dislike a hot dormancy.

Two to three times the bulb's own height is the working rule, and the four plants that break it are the four most often planted wrong. A bearded iris buried by mulch or a tidy neighbour will make leaves for years and never flower again.
After flowering. Leave the foliage entirely alone until it yellows in late spring. Snowdrops are among the least tolerant bulbs of early tidying, because the growing season is so short that a few weeks lost is a large fraction of it.

Growing it

  • PlantingBuy and plant them in the green — in leaf, just after flowering — rather than as dry autumn bulbs. Snowdrop bulbs desiccate badly in storage and a bag of dry ones frequently produces almost nothing, which is the commonest reason people conclude snowdrops will not grow for them.
  • PropagationLift and split congested clumps immediately after flowering and replant at once at the same depth. This is how a colony is spread across a garden, and it is far faster and more reliable than buying more.
  • WateringSnowdrops grow through the wettest months of the British year and need no watering whatever in the ground. Their season is the mirror image of most bulbs: in leaf from midwinter, dormant through the summer, and wanting soil that holds moisture in spring but is not stagnant. The one time water matters is after planting in the green — bulbs moved in leaf in late winter have disturbed roots and a full canopy at the same time, and a dry March fortnight straight afterwards is the usual reason a newly moved clump sulks or fails.
  • FeedingFeeding is rarely the answer with snowdrops and leaf mould usually is. They are woodland plants and what they respond to is organic matter on the surface — a mulch of leaf mould or garden compost after the foliage dies back, which feeds slowly and keeps the summer soil cool and steady. If a specialist clump genuinely needs a push, a high-potash liquid feed while the leaves are green works, but never a nitrogen feed: soft growth on a plant whose leaves have to survive frost is not an improvement.
