Every trailing stem roots where it touches soil, so it advances steadily into neighbouring plants and cannot be reliably removed once it is through a border, because every rooted fragment left behind regrows.
  • PruningCut the whole planting over hard in early spring every second or third year. Left alone it builds up into a thin sprawling mat with bare patches underneath; shearing it keeps it dense enough to actually suppress weeds, which is the job it was planted for.

Where to make a pruning cutFour stems compared. The first is cut cleanly on a slope about five millimetres above an outward-facing bud, sloping away from it, and is labelled correct.
