   A plant that flowers freely and sets little or no fruit. It is the commonest disappointment in fruit growing and it has four quite different causes, only one of which is the plant's fault. Working out which applies is the difference between fixing it and replacing a healthy tree.

   Ask whether this happens every year or only this one. Sweet cherry compatibility is genetic rather than seasonal — two cultivars in the same S-allele group reject each other's pollen however well they flower together — so a tree that has never set a crop despite a neighbour in flower beside it is the classic sign, and a one-off failure is not.

   Check whether your cultivar is self-fertile before doing anything else, because most modern garden cherries are and need no partner. Where one genuinely is needed, a self-fertile cultivar such as Stella pollinates every other sweet cherry regardless of group, which sidesteps the compatibility tables entirely.

2. Cold damage

   Blackened, translucent or limp tissue appearing suddenly after a cold night or a spell beside a draught. Tender plants show it well above freezing — basil blackens around 10 °C — so 'there has been no frost' does not rule it out.

   Accept the loss for this season and think about position rather than treatment. A cherry on a dwarfing rootstock against a wall can be fleeced in a way a standard tree cannot, which is one of the better arguments for the smaller rootstocks in a frost-prone garden.
