Growing it

  • MulchingTuck straw or fibre mats under the plants once the fruit begins to swell. It keeps the berries off wet soil, which is the main defence against grey mould and slugs — and it is where the name comes from.
  • ProtectionNet before the fruit colours. Birds take strawberries the day before you would have.
  • PropagationPeg two or three runners per plant into pots of compost in midsummer, sever them once rooted, and use them to start a new bed. Replacing a third of the bed each year keeps the whole planting productive without ever buying plants again.
