Aquaponics
Hydroponics coupled to a fish system, where the fish waste is nitrified into plant nutrition and the plants clean the water.
What this changes about growing
- The nutrient profile is set by what the fish are fed, so it cannot be dialled in the way a hydroponic solution can — nitrogen is usually plentiful, potassium, calcium and iron often short.
- Two living systems share one set of conditions, and the compromise pH suits neither perfectly.
- Leafy crops and herbs are the reliable performers; heavy-feeding fruiting crops are the harder case.
Safety
The system is livestock as well as horticulture: fish welfare and a power-cut plan are part of running it.
What GrowingHQ has assessed in it
Only plants with an actual assessment appear here. A plant that is absent has not been ruled out — it has not been looked at for this method.
