Carrot

Daucus carota subsp. sativus

A crop with two requirements and very little else to it: deep stone-free soil, and protection from carrot fly. Get those right and carrots are undemanding. Get the soil wrong and they fork; skip the mesh and they are tunnelled through by the time you lift them. Carrots also resent transplanting absolutely, so they are always sown where they are to grow.
